Predicting annual energy consumption with thermal simulation: A UK perspective on mitigation of risks in estimation and operation

Predictions of annual energy consumption in new buildings are becoming increasingly important within the construction industry. However, at present there are few guidelines published that advise engineers of a robust methodology for estimates. This paper introduces the use of heating degree days calculated from simulation weather data as a way of monitoring actual performance against predicted heating energy consumption. Weaknesses in available guidance for annual energy consumption prediction and benchmarking of sub-metered loads are highlighted. It also discusses the limitations of simulation software and considers how simulation software should be used when calculating annual energy consumption in an accountable manner for contractual agreements in order to reduce risk of conflict.
